In the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Blueprint signed by the leaders of the ASEAN Member States (AMS), all of the ASEAN Member States agreed to strive for achieving legislation of Competition Policy and Law by 2015. In order to achieve this goal, the ASEAN Ministers of Commerce formed the ASEAN Experts Group on Competition (AEGC) as a regional forum in August, 2017 to conduct negotiation and collaboration for Competition-Related Matters.
AEGC meetings are organized twice a year and ASEAN Member States take the role of president on a rotation basis, hosting the meetings in their respective country. The meetings include AEGC meetings held among the 10 AMS exclusively as well as related meetings attended by ASEAN’s partners such as GIZ (Germany), AANZFTA (ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand), and EU. In the meetings, discussions are focused on the on-going activities, planned actions, completion and barriers faced regarding Competition Policy and Law, and identifying solutions and necessary support to address these barriers as well as coordinating with partner countries on support programs and awareness raising activities they can offer in assistance.
Myanmar will take its turn as the president and host country for 19th and 20th AEGC Meeting and related meetings which will be held in 2017, and the 19th AEGC Meeting and related meetings will be held in Chatrium Hotel, Yangon from April 3rd to 6th, 2017.
Consequently, the 20th AEGC Meeting and related meetings will be held in Naypyitaw in November, 2017. Regarding Competition-Related Matters, the responsible agency in Myanmar – Competition Policy Division, Department of Trade – has been working on implementation in line with ASEAN procedures under the guidance of the Union Minister for the Ministry of Commerce, and Director General of the Department of Trade.
